Moved to this site after the destruction of Manila in World War II, Santo Domingo is best known as the home of a beautiful and richly-robed image of the Virgin Mary called 'Nuestra Señora de La Naval' (Our Lady of La Naval). Said to be miraculous, The famous centuries-old ivory image is credited for having saved the City of Manila several times from invasion by the Dutch navy in 1646. The yearly procession dedicated to the image is one of Manila's biggest religious festivals.

In 1941, when her shrine in the old Sto. Domingo Church in Manila was bombed; La Naval was safely hidden for a time in the old church’s vault, and later transferred to the chapel of the University of Sto. Tomas. In 1952, the cornerstone was laid for a new shrine at the Sto. Domingo Church in Quezon City and in 1954, La Naval was led in solemn procession by the Philippines hierarchy, public officials, priests, nuns, and thousands of devotees to her new home. This shrine was declared by the Philippine bishops as the national shrine of the Queen of the Holy Rosary of the Philippines.
