Opened in 1908 as a state school for children with special needs, it was closed in 1987 after a lawsuit in regards to patient mistreatment and abuse, a lawsuit which made its way to the U.S. Supreme Court.

A good percentage of the campus is abandoned, while other parts have been repurposed as a VA hospital, an armory, a landscaping business and a somewhat controversial haunted attraction. Almost every original building still stands.

  • Good link for Pennhurst Information: http://www.elpeecho.com/pennhurst/pennhurst.htm
  • The buildings are still there. Nothing has changed. There was a fire in Franklin 1/5/08.
  • I went there in July of '08 after being tipped off about it by a hotel clerk over in Wyomissing. I'm telling you, there is so much to see there for the eye.A lot of sadness there.I went with a group of four people and didn't run into any security.(unless you count one guy working in a garage on the outskirts of the campus, lol)The place was empty. We went into the Administrative Building,Dietary and Rockwell. The handicap tunnels down there are surreal. I cant describe it enough. If you are into Urban Exploration or just ghost hunting, this is a "drop everything,must-see" location. Although it gets under my skin to see it defiled by losers with thier spray paint, breaking windows and stealing things.
