Sirsi ಶಿರಸಿ is a town in Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka. Its like a hill station populated with around 65,000 people. This town is surrounded with lush green forests & numerous waterfalls. Hubli being the nearest commercial city, business opportunities are plenty. Supari (Arecanut) is the primary business of the people. People own Arecanut farms in acres & are satisfying the needs of the people all over India and abroad. Other than arecanut, other commodities like cardamom, pepper and vanilla are also grown. Majority of the people speak Kannada and Konkani. Local language is Kannada.
Sirsi is famous for the Marikamba temple, built in 1688. The fabulous Marikamba fair takes place every alternate year. Millions of devotees rush in from all parts of the country to attend this magnificent fair of Sri Marikamba.Just nearby there is another temple of Mahaganapati and Shri Gopalakrishna.
Sirsi is about 425 km from Bangalore. The nearest airport is located in Hubli, about 100 km away.
River Aghanashini takes birth from a place near Sirsi called "Donihalla" and flows towards Arabian Sea in the west.
Banavasi, an ancient kingdom which was ruled by the "Kadamba" dynasty is 24 Kms away from the city center. Banavasi was considered as the first capital of karnataka state, with the current capital being Bangalore. Though much of the look and feel of the dynasty in Banavasi has been lost to modern day developements, an ancient temple for Adikeshwara still exists with all the ancient carvings and paintings. Good place for archaeologist and historians to study.
Sahasralinga, translated in the regional dialect Kannada means thousad shiva(diety)linga's or scultptures which are carved on stones are situated in a flowing river. The river is surrounded by lush green forest;the place is nearly 10kms away from the city center. Usually the place is free of visitors except on "Shivaratri" celebration days.
Dr Patwardhan herbal garden is 80 years old & is termed as a living libarary . It is maintained by Dr Patwardhan family.
