Originally, the place where Lake Silvermere is situated was an oxbow bend in the Fraser River. When the Fraser River changed it's course, the ex-river turned into a marsh. Before it was dyked in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Lake Silvermere was part of the Stave River marsh, which protected the Fraser Valley from major floods, and flowed as part of the Stave River during high water when it rained, or during snow melt in the springtimes. Now it has been dredged deep enough for power boats to move around in, and is a private lake owned and maintained by the residents living on it's east shore.
