Thibaw Palace (Ratnagiri)

India / Maharashtra / Ratnagiri
 palace, monument

Thibaw palace is an architectural grandeur created for the king Thibaw Min of Myanmar who was in exile in the city. The palace came into use from 13th November 1909 upto the kings death on 16 December 1916.
Take the stairs and open the doors one by one till you reach the balcony. Open another door near the stairs and you suddenly see the wide sea in front of you. Wonderful experience if you come directly from the station, without seeing the sea at Ratnagiri.
This is rarely done by the tourists who go to the museum and then come back. The person selling the tickets at the museum is very friendly and informative.

  • Read "King Thebaw and the ecological rape of Burma" by C.L. Keeton. Don't get confused by the title. It was BBTC (Bombay Burma Trading Corporation) of the British that conducted the rape. The British stole crores of ruppes of teak from Burma by bribing few officers. As the King protested war broke out and the Burmese king along with his family was kidnapped from his palace and shifted to Ratnagiri via Chennai (then Madras).
