Monitor M33 (Portsmouth)

United Kingdom / England / Portsmouth
place with historical importance, museum ship

HMS M33 Royal Navy monitor, one of only two British warships to survive from World War 1. Built in 1915 as part of the M29 Class of monitors, and the sole surviving monitor. Monitors were specialised relatively small and not very seaworthy vessels equipped with extraordinarily large guns, for coastal bombardment in estuaries. Two larger monitors, HMS General Wolfe and HMS Lord Clive have the dubious distinction of having fired from their 18 inch guns the largest shells ever fired at sea (weight two tonnes), and over the longest range ever recorded (23 miles).

M33 is owned by Hampshire County Council Museum Service. Although visitor access is not yet possible, her position in No 1 Drydock presents an opportunity to get a closer look at this historic vessel. She is being restored to as near as possible her 1915-19 configuration
