Melbourne
Melbourne (pronounced /ˈmel.bən/) is the second most populous city in Australia, with a metropolitan area population of approximately 3.7 million (2006 estimate). Located around Port Phillip Bay in the country's south-east, Melbourne is the state capital of Victoria.
Melbourne is a major centre of commerce, industry and cultural activity. The city is often referred to as Australia's "sporting and cultural capital" and it is home to many of the nation's most significant cultural and sporting events and institutions. Melbourne is notable for its mix of Victorian and contemporary architecture, its extensive tram network and Victorian parks and gardens, and its diverse, multicultural society. It was the host city of the 1956 Summer Olympics and the 2006 Commonwealth Games.
Melbourne was founded by free settlers in 1835, 47 years after the first European settlement of Australia, as a small pastoral settlement situated around the Yarra River. Transformed rapidly into a major metropolis by the Victorian gold rush in the 1850s, "Marvellous Melbourne" became Australia's largest and most important city by 1865, but was overtaken by Sydney as the largest city in Australia during the early 20th century.
Melbourne served as the capital city of Australia from the time of the new nation's Federation in 1901, until Federal Parliament moved to the new, purpose-built capital, Canberra, in 1927.

migrated here in 1977 from MY and have not looked back since. great place to live. people are generally friendly, although, it is very Australian to 'not care' what other ppl do! I could run naked down Bourke Street and no one would care ... generally.
great food (and coffee) places ... much better than any capital city in Australia, although Darwin and Adelaide come closer than any of the others. (Sydney food sucks, is mostly chain restaurants and is expensive. And when it is reasonable, it is REALLY expensive. Brisbane has nothing to offer. WHERE do you go for real food in Hobart? Canberra? Where's that!?!! Perth - do you want to go that far for food?)
good weather generally. although, it changes a lot from time to time. Best time to visit is autumn/fall/Easter. (But it was a wet and cold Easter this year.) |

Welcome to Australia, killa. I want to get home as soon as possible. My parents are divorced, I am a 17 year old going to highschool here in the U.S, and I hate it so much. Americans know nothing about the world around them, when I say I am from Australia they think I am some outback junky, and don't even know that Australia has world class cities, and all they seem to know is Sydney and that is from the Opera House and Harbour Bridge, and Finding Nemo!
My dad moved to Australia before I was born, met my mum, and then they got divorced when I was two. My dad moved back here to the U.S. My mum had the great idea of me moving here to finish school living with my dad. Well it has been hell. I miss all my friends back in Lilydale, I miss my family, I miss Australia, and most of all, I MISS HOME. I am an Australian who is living life in America. I have an American brother who is 4 years older than me, has that annoying American way of looking at things, and I am stuck here. I have made lots of friends here, but it is nothing like my Aussie friends. I live outside of Pittsburgh. I have a friend Robert from the U.K. and he shares the same views towards the U.S. as me, and strangly enough he is living here too due to divorced parents. He has become one of my best friends here. Overall, Australia beats the U.S. hands down in anything. Australia is my home, and I can't wait to get back, only one more year!
Enough about me lol:
To be honest, Australia has a great mix of cities. My favourite is obviously Melbourne, but I really do like Brisbane. My grandparents live up there (Redcliffe), and I have family in Adelaide, and I know many call Adelaide "boring", but it has so much to offer. It is an attractive city. Perth is far out, but home to over 1.5 million and growing fast. Hobart is in beautiful Tasmania, and Sydney is a world class city, that is one of the most attractive in the world. I am proud of Australia's diverse cities, and our diverse population. Not many countries in the world can offer what Australia has, and I am proud to call myself an Australian. |

Sorry that I wrote TOO MUCH FOR YOU! I was just trying to say that Australia has a great mix of cities, especially for our small population. It was no biography, I could have wrote a lot more about how much living in the U.S. is hell right now. Have you ever lived in the U.S. before?
Australia has amazing cities, and Melbourne is just one of them. |
