The Water Gardens Estate was built in 1961-66, designed by Trehearne, Norman, Preston & Partners for the Church Commissioners, around a courtyard with large shallow artificial ponds and deck gardens over a car park.
The Water Gardens comprises a mix of three 17 storey high towers with low rise blocks. There are the retail units at basement/ground floor, offices at first floor level, a mix of offices and residential flats at second floor level.
The gardens were designed by Philip Hicks in Modernist style with split levels, rectangular forms and strong horizontals to counteract the surrounding verticals, its rocks, willows and falling water providing an almost Oriental atmosphere. The original ‘brutalist’ gardens were implemented in 1966 and widely refurbished in 2018 with all planting and paving lifted and replaced.
