The island mostly consistes of beaches, dunes, and pine forests. The name "Gotska Sandön" means "Gotlandish Sand Island". Apart from a colony of grey seals, the higher fauna is not very rich. However, there are many rare insects and plants, including several kinds of orchids.
It has been a National park since 1909.
There is a regular boat service from Fårö Island and Nynäshamn on the mainland during the summer.
