1 Borneo Hypermall, or "1 B" as the locals love to call it, is the largest lifestyle hypermall in East Malaysia and even on Borneo Island. This complex, spread over a 10 ha site with 4 hotels, 4 condominium blocks and 13 354 sq. metres of shopping ground, has 3 floors of shops to offer visitors. The main tenant here is Giant Hypermarket, and other notable businesses here would be Parkson, Toys R Us and Times Bookstore.
Construction of the mall first began back in 2007, and the partially completed mall had its soft opening on May 31st 2008. The opening ceremony of the mall was indeed a grand occasion, and there was even a fireworks display. Construction works were then concentrated on the 3 28-storey and one 12-storey condominium towers, till all 4 were completed by 2011. 1 Borneo was jointly developed by Sagajuta (Sabah) Sdn. Bhd, Warisan Harta Sabah Sdn Bhd as well as United Sabah Islamic Association, the owner of the site of the mall.
1 Borneo is located about 8 km away from the central business district of Kota Kinabalu (14 km from the airport), and is easily accessible through any major highway in the city. It is also fairly easy to reach here through public transport. For those wanting a cheaper alternative, take the blue-coloured Sepangar bus (no. 6B) or the City Bus, which starts its route from the Mosque Valley bus stop (right outside King Park Hotel) down at the CBD. Of course, taking a cab would be a quicker alternative. Those intending to drive here should know that the mall can be accessed through 3 entrances:
Entrance A - to underground carpark or west wing of the mall, Auto City
Entrance B - Main entrance to mall foyer, hotels (at the south wing)
Entrance C - to rooftop carpark, condominium tower carpark, north and east wing of mall
There are plenty of parking options for those who wish to visit 1 Borneo. One may choose to park at the underground carpark, rooftop carpark, or at the jockey bay with a fee. Some locals have even parked at Utama Plaza across the road, before using the overhead bridge to get to 1 Borneo, which pretty much saves the hassle of finding a parking space in the mall itself during weekends and Public Holidays, or during an event, where parking spaces are at their full capacity.
