Yfanet (Thessaloniki)

Greece / Thessaloniki / Triandria / Thessaloniki
abandoned / shut down, production, interesting place

This was the embroidery factory of YFANET. It currently is an anarchist and social movement squat and restored and saved from fallen into ruin. It is officially owned by the National Bank of Greece and in 2006 the Ministry of Culture bought the factory, to convert it into a museum and exhibit the famed Kostaki Collection of Russian Avant-Garde artwork, which are now in London, in the USA, in Athens and in Thessaloniki (Moni Lazariston).
There are a plenty of different groups using its spacious rooms and there are plenty of people who live there as well. The squat is open to all public for discussions regarding social problems, working rights, emigrant rights etc, there is almost always a regular activity taking place there in neighborhood-wide or nation-wide scale.Different political activist and working syndicates like the one of the waitors' and teams meet each other there in weekly basis.
Drugs are not welcome.

  • Crime rate comments are not true. I live near the place and its one of the safest places in thessaloniki.
  • The place is drug-free. Yfanet was infested with drugs only before the squat because it was abandoned from the national bank of greece for decades.
  • I ve been there, the place is great, and absolutely safe and drug-free, the squatters keep the place clean. Bring your camera, the old factory is great.

  • Yfanet is a place where criminality find rescue. They use to break cars and shops with hammers and jemmies just for fun!! From time to time they get involved in Bank robberies just to find the money they need.. It is said that most of them are foreign outlaws and some of them are Brats from rich families that find this way exciting because they never wanted to find a job for making a living!!
  • Have lived near that neighborhood for 17 years. There was drug trafficking and crime before the occupation of this building. Now it is alive again, with artistic, cultural and political activity. It is a place for the expression of the youth, far from the standards set by a disgusting dominant lifestyle. I don't know whether people who object are irritated by the ideals that the occupants stand for, or by the fact that the place should be "utilised" by its "rightful owners". Anyway, the intentions of the person who filled in the description are obvious... p.s.: How did you quantify drugs and criminality and then calculate the rise at 40% up?
