This almost circular area is the ancient Kano city. The city was once fortified by high, wide mud walls, with gates, called "kofa" in Hausa, at intervals. Most of the mud wall has now fallen in disrepair, but in recent times the gates have been restored with beautiful local architecture to mark these points of historical importance, as well as to facilitate passage of modern roads and traffic through them.
