The Goiania Convention center is built on the site of former Instituto Goiano de Radioterapia, a radiation therapy hospital which closed in 1985. It was from this hospital that two men, seeking scrap steel, found a derelict radioactive teletherapy machine, which still contained its radioactive fuel, 81.4kg of Caesium 137. The men took the machine home and broke open the capsule containing the radioactive material, and the resulting series of events would eventually claim numerous lives and expose over 1000 people to radiation poisoning.
