Northampton railway station

 train station  Add category

The remains of Northampton Castle were demolished in the 1870s to make way for the new railway station and a direct link line on the London-Birmingham main line. This opportunity had been missed in 1838 when Stevenson took the line through Blisworth.

Castle railway station is the only surviving station in Northampton. Originally, it was a small one located on the end of a branch from Market Harborough, with the main station at Bridge Street. Another station was built at St John's which was the terminus of a branch line, but closed long before the Beeching Axe.

However, when a loop from the West Coast Main Line was built, passing at Castle station, it quickly rose in importance, soon becoming the main station in Northampton. With Bridge Street station falling to the Beeching Axe, it became the only one. The Axe itself closed the Market Harborough line, leaving it only on the West Coast main line loop. Today, it is served by local services and some of the Virgin Trains intercity services, though long distance trains bypass it. Some stopping services to Birmingham start here.

Good description. Excellent. Just one small detail about language. 'Terminus' means the end of a line, so it strictly should not be described as the terminus of the Birmingham line. Otherwise, excellent site!
