The statue honors the 17th century Dutch explorer who was the first European to sight and visit the land of what is now New Zealand. The Tahunanui location was chosen so the monument can face the Tasman bay. The original plans were drawn up in 1992 as part of the 350th anniversary of Tasman's visit to Glden Bay but it took another eight years for the project to be completed. It was unveiled on 31 January, 2000. It was attended by the mayor of the municipality of Grootegast, Abel Tasman's hometown.
