The 3,118 foot long Paw Paw Tunnel is lined with over six million bricks. By building the tunnel, the C&O was shortened by almost six miles along the Paw Paw Bends of the Potomac River. It took twelve years to build and was only wide enough for single lane boat traffic.
In this view, the canal is clearly visible exiting the north end of Paw Paw Tunnel.
