The New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad made its entry to New York via the Harlem Line in 1849, but the secondary route known as the Harlem River Branch was opened in 1868 mainly to make freight connections by water with other railroads. The original 'New Haven' Bronx freight terminal was at the SE corner of Lincoln Ave and 132d St, close to the river. It was moved in 1886 to this location, 2 blocks east of the old terminal. Here it had a track connection to the newly opened elevated line and connecting services were run 1886-1924. The terminal was used, like most in the area, through the mid-20th century. The long brick freighthouse lasted into the early 2000's.
