Hagia Sophia (its full name in Greek means the Holy Church of God's Wisdom) was built at the end of the 8th cent, to replace an early christian basilica of immense dimensions, destroyed by earthquake around 620.
It preserves some of its old decoration with mosaics. Most important among them is the mosaic of the dome, showing the Ascension.
