The name is derived from the word Chan+Mari. It was a shooting range used by the British and later Indian police. The practice has been discontinued.

'Chan' is the shooting and 'Mari' means to shoot.

The hill on the South of Chanmari the green area was where the targets were placed.

There is still a small police outpost known as Laalmati Police Outpost. Laalmati means Red soil. Laal is red and mati is soil in Assamese and other Indian languages.
