Founded in 1942 as the McCloskey & Co. Shipyard for the mass-construction of wartime Maritime Commission C1-S-D1 concrete barges, the yard also produced traditional steel-hulled freighters of the Maritime Commission N3-S-A2 type before the end of the war brought about its eventual closure in 1946. Idle through the 1960's, the vacant yard was purchased by American Ship Building and re-opened as a full-service yard and renamed Tampa Shipyards. Seeing limited work in its new guise despite the construction of two panamax graving docks onsite, the yard was idle again by 1995 as its parent company went out of business and traded hands several times before being sold to Edison Chouest Offshore (ECO) in 2008.

Presently the largest capacity yard in the ECO facility list, Tampa Ship is a full-service yard that specializes in conversions, general repair and overhaul work on both ECO and other commercial vessels.
