The original Florida State Prison is across the county border (to the immediate northwest of this facility). That is now the Union County Correctional Institution.

The current Florida State Prison was constructed with the death chamber in 1961.

Serial killers Aileen Wuornos and Ted Bundy were executed here.
Guiseppe Zangara, who tried to assasinate Franklin Delano Roosevelt on February 15, 1933, was also executed at the former facility on March 20, 1933. His unclaimed remains are buried in an unmarked grave at the prison.

  • Guiseppe Zangara was executed at neighboring Raiford Prison (now known as Union Correctional Facility), not Florida State Prison, which was not constructed until 1961.
