This is a busy local shopping area, on Commercial between Broadway and East Hastings. It has many ethnic food stores and delis, coffee shops and restaurants, arts and crafts outlets, little parks and shaded streets, and lots of local people. Not many tourists seem to visit the area, even in summertime. There's lots to see and try. A secret area not mentioned in all tourist publications.

  • The Drive was Italian from the 1950s on, but most have moved off to North Burnaby and elsewhere. The italian presence is much diluted. Large numbers of students and young people in the many apartments and basement suites around, create a youthful vibe. Stores are either very old, or very new and moving often. Too many cafes and restaurants (one-third)for a good life on the street parade. Rather quiet in the morning and at night. One of the few streets with more than a single bookstore (has 3)
  • Once considered the leftist political centre of Vancouver but no more.
