One of the world's most advanced coke plants was built at Schwelgern harbour by the Duisburg company CARBONARIA, replacing an obsolete plant at the adjacent Bruckhausen Works steel mill of ThyssenKrupp Steel AG. It has a capacity of 2.5 million tonnes of blast furnace coke, which is produced mainly from coal imported from overseas. The batteries containing the biggest coke ovens in the world are particularly environmentally friendly.
