island, birdwatching area
Ruffle Bar is the name of a small island located in the Jamaica Bay of New York City, just east of Floyd Bennett Field, bordering Brooklyn and Long Island. It was once the place of a successful clam and oyster industry, but closed down when the water was deemed by the Department Of Health to be too polluted for the breeding of shellfish. The island is currently uninhabited and has been designated as a bird sanctuary.
