  Am researching for a descendant of James McGuire and his son Robert McGuire who owned McGuire Island before 1900 til around 1956. Would like to know when they bought the island or how they acquired the island and when it became state property again. James McGuire died in 1915 and Robert McGuire died the 1960s.

  I camped here one summer weekend. Two friends, myself, and a dog loaded a canoe at the Chinook Landing Park on the Oregon side of the river. Two of us swam while the third paddled the canoe across. The canoe was filled with our gear and a pacing dog who threatened to tip the whole thing the entire trip. That weekend was amazing. Deer, egrets, eagles and raccoons wandered the island with us. No one else was seen down at our eastern tip of the island. Swimming, adventures and quiet. Just out of town, minutes from a major airport and it felt like we were way out in the middle of nowhere.

  Beautiful island. Took my boys out there last weekend. Paddled canoe from Chinook Landing. Easy to get to-- but hell to go back! Had to fight strong current. The waterway is guarded by a long wing dam and the current will push you against the pilings if you don't give yourself enough room. Lucky the wind was in my favor.
