Banaba is the westernmost island in the Republic of Kiribati. It lies isolated west of the Gilbert Islands.
It was heavily exploited because of its guano deposits. As of today they are exhausted and the island is being abandoned. End of mining was in 1979. Most of the formerly Banaban population live today on Rabi Island, Fidji.
