Culver Down Battery was built as part of Portsmouth's coastal defence system. The battery opened in 1906. During the First World War it was armed with two 9.2-inch breech-loading Mk. X guns to protect the torpedo boat anchorage against long-range armoured cruiser fire. It also mounted a 6-pounder Hotchkiss anti-aircraft gun. During the Second World War it was manned by 118 Battery of 527 Coast Regiment and from 1943 it operated on night duty. The battery was decommissioned in 1956. Traces of the battery survives.
