In 1847, Elijah J. Stone and Jacob C. Thomas founded the Stone and Thomas department store in Wheeling. The store was relocated to the western portion of this 6 floor building in 1890, with an address of 1010 Main Street. A later addition expanded the building to Market Street with 8 floors. The store was closed in 1998 after Stone & Thomas was acquired by Elder-Beerman.
Interior and exterior renovations to convert the 180,000 sq. ft. building into office space were completed in 2005 by the Regional Economic Development Partnership. Current tenants are TTi Technologies, Vista Research, and Williams Lea. It is the home of West Virginia Smart Sensor Supercomputer Center.
