"Stupid Buddha" was the name given to this quiet hermitage (after Shiki's haiku pen-name), that Sōseki and Masaoka Shiki shared for 52 days in the year 1895. Sōseki lived upstairs while Shiki fought tuberculosis in a room below. Those few days were a pivotal time for modern Japanese poetry; Shiki invited other haiku artists to debate the merits of the verse and taught techniques to students of the Shofukai Haiku School. Sōseki was greatly inspired by his friend's passion and began a serious career in literature after they parted ways.
Free, tea ¥300.
