A large surburban town and a major district centre in South London, currently with ambitious regeneration plans to make it 'London's Third City'. It is the principal settlement in the London Borough of Croydon which has the largest population of all the London Boroughs.
Historically Croydon was in Surrey, and developed into the largest town in the county with the arrival of the London & Croydon Railway (later joining with another company to make the Brighton Main Line). Croydon was in the late 20th century more intensively urbanised and became surrounded by a mixture of differing density suburbs - it thus rapidly became a large business and commercial centre. In the early 20th century the fast and town-centre multiple-stop Tramlink was developed, a leitmotif of Croydon,
Some developments from the 1960s appear incongruent such as the large dual-carriageway which bisects the town centre so the Croydon Vision for 2020 has plans for dramatic changes to the town centre to improve its image and importance. Already, Croydon is the largest town centre in Greater London after central London itself.
