Little Boy and Fat-Man nuclear bomb loading pits

This is the correct location for the two loading pits. The one on the left is "Bomb Pit No. 1" and was dug longer to accommodate Little Boy. The one on the right is "Bomb Pit No. 2" and is extra wide for Fat Man. Both bombs were too tall to fit under the aircraft for loading without the pits, and both bombs also required major modifications to the B-29 Superfortreses--"Enola Gay" and "Bockscar"--that bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
