Officially named “Place de la Libération” (though most maps indicate “Place du Général-de-Gaulle”, this is not used locally), the Rotunda Place (French: place de la Rotonde, Provençal dialect: Plaça de la Rotonda) was built in 1777 to give a “noble” entrance to the main artery of the city of Aix-en-Provence, at the West end of Avenue Mirabeau.
