museum, house, 17th century construction
Thomas Halsey, landowner and farmer who came to the South Fork in 1640 from Lynn, MA built a home on property he acquired from the Shinnecock Indians in Southampton in 1647, which no longer exists. His son Thomas Halsey Jr. built this home c.1666 on the same land, a rare "first period" house. Believed to be the sixth oldest surviving English-style house in New York State, the Halsey home is filled with 17th and 18th century furnishings, donated by local families. The Southampton Historical museum acquired the house and its contents in 1958, restored it in 1959, and again in 2003.
