Bucium Monastery | orthodox christianity

 monastery, orthodox christianity

This Orthodox Monastery is dedicated to the Transfiguration of Christ. It was rebuilt in 1990 on the site of the old Hermitage Bucium documented in 1737 and burned down in 1762 by direct order from Austrian General Nicholaus Adolf von Bukow, Governor of Transylvania.

In 1761-1762 almost all Orthodox Romanian monasteries and hermitages in Transylvania were destroyed as a measure of a consistent plan to 'pacify' areas affected by peasant movement led by the monk Sofronie.

Sofronie of Cioara was a Transylvanian Orthodox monk who advocated for the freedom of worship of the Romanian population in Transylvania. Today, Sofronie is a Romanian Orthodox Saint, canonized on 21 October 1955 in Alba Iulia by the Romanian Orthodox Church.
