Hangal (Panugal)is belived to be Viratanagar of Mahabharatha, the Pandavas took shelter here in disguise to undergo the Ajnatavasa(unnoticed) for a year. It is an ancient town ruled by Hoysala kings and they built famous temples like Tarakeswara temple complex, Billeswara, etc and subsequently destroyed by the foreign Muslim invaders. An ASI recognised place and tourist place visited by locals, neighbouring places including foreigners.
