This lake was created when Wascana Creek was dammed to make a reservoir for the railway and cattle ranchers. It was also used for recreational purposes, the lake's shallow level caused those to be abandoned by the 1920s.
During the Great Depression, the lake was dredged and widened by teams of men using hand tools and horse-drawn carts. Two islands, Spruce and Willow, were built with the excavated soil. In 2004, the lake was again deepened and two more islands, Discovery and Pine, were formed.
