 lighthouse, interesting place

Sands Point Lighthouse, a 40-foot brownstone tower built in 1809 by American Revolutionary War veteran Noah Mason, who stayed on as its first keeper through 1841. Sometimes referred to as Mitchell Lighthouse, after Samuel L. Mitchell, the man who fought for it to be constructed. It was in 1806 that New York State Governor Daniel D. Tompkins purchased the five acres from Benjamin Hewlett to be used for the lighthouse. Mason had added to the original wood frame keeper’s house until it contained 23 rooms. In 1867 Congress allocated funds to renovate the tower and replace the keeper’s home. The old dwelling was replaced with a new brick one and old lumber used to build a barn, shed and outhouse. In 1922 the Lighthouse was officially deactivated. It has remained in private ownership by various owners of the property since 1924. The beacon was moved to an automated steel skeleton tower located offshore.

Its former keeper's house from 1868 was demolished in 2000 to be incorporated into a mansion. The lighthouse was recently restored by Integrated Conservation Resources (ICR-ICC).
