Ashtian (Persian: آشتيان)

Ashtian is an old city located in the northeast of Markazi province of Iran. The town of Ashtian itself had a population of 6,000 in 1951. The town lies in a fertile agricultural district, watered by surface streams and qanats. The region is a famous one for carpet-weaving. Among its historical monuments a re a fortress and a Safavid era caravanserai. Various learned men and religious figures have stemmed from Ashtian. The people of Ashtian speak a Persian dialect known as Ashtiani and follow the Shi'ite branch of Islam.
