Buena Park Downtown, formerly Buena Park Mall. The mall is anchored by Bed Bath & Beyond, DSW Shoe Warehouse, Ross Dress For Less, Sears, Steve & Barry's, 24 Hour Fitness, and Wal-Mart.
The mall opened in 1961 and is currently managed by Developers Diversified Realty. The mall also has stores across the street with Petsmart, Office Depot, Kohl's and Circuit City as primary tenants. The mall also has a movie theater operated by Krikorian Theaters.
Buena Park Mall was originally an outdoor shopping center anchored by JCPenney, Sears, and May Co. May Co. closed in the early 1990s, and was replaced with discount chain Fedco, which in turn was demolished and replaced with Wal-Mart.
The mall also featured a movie theater until the 1980s; the theater space has been converted to retail space. A new movie theater, Krikorian Theaters, opened in the late 1990s, replacing the site once occupied by JCPenney. Burlington Coat Factory, a later addition to the mall, closed in 2005 and was replaced with Steve & Barry's. Tower Records also operated in the mall until the demise of the chain in 2007. Recently, the Chicago eatery Portillo's opened their first Southern California outlet at the mall in 2005.
When the mall enclosure happened in the early 1980's, it lost some of it's charm.
After May Company closed and Penney's left, smaller stores followed and now, nearly 20 years later, this white elephant still seems to be struggling to fill the gaping retail voids throughout the mall.
