The Prewar Jewish cemetery (Riga)

Latvia / Riga / Riga
 jewish cemetery, green area

The Jewish cemetery dates back to 1725. The cemetery was extended in 1868 and again in 1896. After World War II, the Russian occupiers, in an act of anti-semetic vandalism, desecrated the land, destroyed the hundred or so remaining grave stones and converted it into the 'Park of the Communist Brigades'. Today it is one of the more peaceful areas of Riga and is marked by a simple stone inscribed with the Star of David.

Comments

  • It was not an 'russian occupiers anti-semitic act'. The jewish cemetery became abandoned after WWII because all Riga's jews were killed by Nazis. There were nobody who took care about the graves of their relatives. In 50's cemetery became worst and worst, it was a garbage and very dangerous place for the local people because they were rubbed there during the dark time. Then city council decided to demolish the cemetery and make a park there.
