San Francisco, California

The City and County of San Francisco is the fourth most populous city in California and the fourteenth-most populous in the United States, with a 2010 population of 805,235. It is located on the tip of the San Francisco Peninsula and is the focal point of the San Francisco Bay Area. San Francisco is the second most densely populated major city in the United States.

In 1776, the Spanish settled the tip of the San Francisco peninsula, establishing a fort at the Golden Gate and a mission named for Francis of Assisi. As a result of the California Gold Rush in 1848, the city entered a period of rapid growth. After being devastated by the 1906 earthquake and fire, San Francisco was quickly rebuilt.

  • Undoubtedly the most beautiful city on the Earth.
  • You can look at the comments for all the other cities in the world on this program ... and most of them have comments like "this is the best city on earth". But there's only one best city on earth, it's San Francisco. Duh.
  • There are many "Best" cities in the world. The Best of the Best are usually the ones one calls home.
  • Great city, always something to do. Restaurants are top-notch, great weather, fitness savvy, multi-cultural.
  • Mytliu: The Alta California edit is incorrect, as that territory ceased to exist after the Mexican-American war.

  • San Francisco is awesome! It's so diverse and multi-cultural, and it's just a really beautiful place to be. It's a very nice city, enjoyable place to be ++
  • I've been there. Trust me, it's the most beautiful city in the World! You'll never be bored there.
  • Yup, it's a nice place. Every resident in SF could go out to dinner on the same night, and there would still be room for tourists. ;-) Are you thinking of moving here? Consider that July is one of the colder, damper months, it's one of the most expensive places in the country, if not the world to live. And in spite of it's rather liberal reputation, it's really rather provincial. And yes, the population is dominated by people who fled their humdrum lives in bland places, and/or their families. There's a bar in the Mission District which explicitly charges hipsters more for beer!
  • @Jaded Bay Area - not sure what you're trying to say. Are you saying the general area around SF is rather liberal? Because it's not. San Francisco takes the liberals cause to extreme. The only town that might rival San Francisco is Berkeley. Oakland is nowhere near the liberal town SF is, and if you move down south to Palo Alto, or north to Marin, none of the cities come close to San Francisco's craziness.
  • San Francisco is... not good. Don't ever live here. (Please note: This is just my Opinion) Now don't get me wrong. There are some nice things about San Francisco. The Golden Gate Bridge, The Bay Bridge, the Downtown Skyscrapers, Fisherman's Wharf, Alcatraz, the Fog and cool temperatures, along with the coast and harbors, and other great places. Plus, they have Oracle Park! Go Giants! However, San Francisco is a hyper-liberal (and possibly dystopian) city that is rampant with homelessness, crime, laughably terrible laws, and many of the people are so hypocritical (no offense to the people here. San Francisco still has many great people!). Not to mention, everything is extremely overpriced. Overall, the City is not good, which is unfortunate, because back in the day, it used to be a great city, but on a positive note, it still has its pros. To me, it's a good place to visit, but not so much to live.
