ShopRite of Hillsdale

Supermarket, opened in 1980 or 1981. Originally owned by Singer, now part of the Inserra family of ShopRite stores.

When Singer ShopRite opened, this building, which had previously held a Valley Fair discount department store, was large by contemporary supermarket standards. The front of the store, which lacked today's entrance vestibule, featured a number of smaller stores-within-a-store. These included Vitamin Quota, Peter's Pizza, Carteret Savings, and a record store. Inserra took over by the mid-1980s, and the multi-business model was abandoned. The store has been renovated several times since.

During a fierce thunderstorm in July, 2009, several large sign panels atop the store's facade (letters spelling the store's name) were blown to the ground and destroyed. All the letters were subsequently removed and replaced.

This site was once home to the Isaac Cole estate.
