Temple of Nike (Weimar)

The two-storey building on the Goetheplatz was built in 1860 according to a draft by Carl Ferdinand Streichhan and financed by the Russian czar´s daughter and Grand Duchess of Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach Maria Pavlovna. She wanted the building - its columned hall is an imitation of the temple of Nike on the Acropolis in Athens - to be erected as the headquarters of the "Reading Association". This association enabled its members and the public to find information about political, scientific and entertaining themes and thus to spread knowledge and education. www.wimare.de/popup_picture.php?lang=en&city=w&page=41
