Church of St. Julien le Pauvre (Paris)

The "Eglise St. Julien le Pauvre", the "church of poor St. Julien", is one of the oldest and smallest and most quaint churches of Paris. Destroyed by the Vikings in 886, it was rebuilt at the end of the 10th c.. In 1610 it was given to the Cluniac monks of the Abbey of Longpont (in the Essonne département), and given its current name. Located on the main Gallic and Roman road of ancient Paris, which was the route to Lourdes and St. Jacques de Compostelle and other pilgrimage sites -- and nowadays set in a pretty riverside garden with a beautiful view of Notre Dame -- this little church is one of the best Paris venues for both relief from crowds and a place to imagine the city's very long history. www.sjlpmelkites.org/
