Founded in 1989, the Homeless Prenatal Program (HPP) reaches out to families, women who are pregnant, and parents providing them with prenatal and postpartum education and support, counseling, referrals for substance abuse, domestic violence, and housing as well as support services. HPP has a peer-delivered system of community outreach and education, which enlists the help of former clients, who, once trained, become effective community healthcare providers, as well as empowered, self-sufficient parents. Risk factors that are routinely addressed include pregnancy, low birth weight and prematurity, addiction, homelessness, poverty, and partner and street violence.
