Institute für Altertumskunde (Cologne) The Papyrus Collection of the Institute für Altertumskunde is a spezial kind of library. It houses writings that date from about 300 B.C. through the 7th century A.D. These include remnants of book rolls and codexes with ancient literary works on the one hand, on the other documentary texts such as deeds of sale, tax lists and private letters. The collection contains some 6000 papyri and parchments of varying size, 500 ostraca, 20 wood tablets, 20 lead tablets, and a bronze placque. Papyrologists in Cologne work in close contact with collections elsewhere in Germany and in foreign countries.
