Originally named the Iroquois Hotel and built in 1906, the business was renamed the Albany Hotel in 1912 after an extensive enlargement and alteration. Over the decades, the Albany gained a reputation as a "seedy" hotel and was the scene of many violent crimes.
It closed in the late 1990s, and was acquired by Corrections Canada. Starting in 2000, it serves as a halfway house for federal offenders, under the name of the Meewasinota Community Residence.
