water desalination plant, water supply treatment plant

Port Stanvac Desalination plant is a SWRO (Sea Water Reverse Osmosis) desalination plant currently under construction at Lonsdale, South Australia which will provide the city of Adelaide with a significant amount of drinking water.

In June 2009, Acciona Agua, the builders of the plant, confirmed that the annual output will be doubled from 50 gigalitres to 100 gigalitres (approximately 270 megalitres per day). This will represent some 50% of Adelaide's domestic water supply.

The plant will begin operations (50 gigalitres) in late 2010 and will be completed (100 gigalitres) by late 2012.

The plant will source its electricity from renewable energy sources provided by AGL Energy at an estimated cost of $75 million per year.
