The most important monastery of the ORTHODOX CHURCH in Eritrea, and spiritual center of the indigenous church, debre Bizen was founded during 1350"s on a mountain top(2,450 m.0 above the present town of Nefasit, from where it commanded the crucial Trade Routes ffrom massawa to the highlands. It was founded by the great disciple of Ewostatewos"religious reform movement, Aba Filipos (c.1323-1406), a native of Inyankere. Debre Bizen means a "place of vision'".
