City with a population of 29,540 in 2006. It was first settled by representatives of the Hudson's Bay Company in 1829. and grew in size due to its location on the river, allowing it to grow as a lumber mill center. American settlers were attracted to the city in the 1840s and 50s. Territorial capital of Oregon from 1848 to 1851. It was the first city west of the Rockies in the United States to be incorporated.
